Hey guys, happy 2020!

Can you believe a new decade is about to begin?

Now that the frenzied holiday season has slowed down, it’s a great time to start making plans and setting goals for the year ahead. Have you made any resolutions yet? Me, I’m just so excited to dive into the interior design trends for the new year!

2020 sounds so futuristic, doesn’t it? But this year’s emerging trends are anything but.

I’m seeing a return to comfort, a rediscovery of natural materials like rattan and wicker, and bold, eye-catching patterns — personally, I love it!

Of course, interior design ultimately boils down to individual taste. Your home should reflect your personality, your values and your sense of style. It should be your happy place

But that’s what’s so great about these six interior design predictions — you can choose which of the following to incorporate into your home, knowing that whichever ones you do go for, you’re on-trend but also true to who you are!

Ready for some new year inspiration? Let’s go!

Monochrome, but not as we know it!

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “monochromatic palette”?

Probably something subtle and subdued like beiges, whites, creams and off-greys, right? Or maybe just straight up black and white?

 Well, not in 2020!

In the coming year, monochromes are big, bold and striking — and not necessarily black, white or grey. Think cobalt blue, warm red and emerald green.

But even with a huge range of hues to play with, monochrome in 2020 is still about using one color on its own. And the bold application of a single color can be so stylish.

So, whichever color you choose, it should become a key element of the room. Use it in pillows and rugs, invest in colorful pots, shelves, picture frames and works of art that will bring your accent color to the forefront.

This trend is perfect for showcasing your daring personality!

The often forgotten rooms, bathrooms will be bold in 2020!

I’ve seen it with many of my clients: when planning an interior design project, many people tend to overlook the bathroom — or, at least, let this room sit toward the end of their priority list.

In 2020, however, it’s time for your bathroom to shine… and I’m not just referring to its cleanliness!

So how can you help this typically small space pack a big punch? It’s all about fun, decorative touches, such as playful wallpaper or wall/floor tiles.

Geometric patterns are here to stay!

From Art Deco ziggurat patterns to rustic plaid and origami-inspired shapes, in 2020 geometric patterns will be even more on-trend than in recent years.

Thing is, it’s easy to go a little over-the-top — patterns of all shapes and sizes should be approached with care and consideration, and geometry is no exception.

After all, geometric patterns are very visually stimulating. Mix too many patterns together, and the effect could be dizzying for friends and family!

That’s why it’s good to start simple and then work your way up to bigger, bolder contrasts — especially if you’re just starting to experiment with patterns in the home. For inspiration, why not check out my approach on a client’s son’s bedroom, for a creative way to incorporate and echo a single, bold geometric shape across a room.

But, if you have a confident design eye, then why not really go for gold? Combining varying lines and angles can create a magnificent bold statement, like in the example below.

The best bits of old and new combined

The matchy-matchy interior design approach is so not 2020.

Instead, you should feel free to mix new, designer pieces with second-hand finds, souvenirs from your travels and things you already own…

Combining old and new items is a trend that brings to mind eclectic, boutique design hotels — and in 2020 will give your home the same level of sophistication. So feel free to hang on to your favorite items when redecorating your space and gradually add new items that are meaningful to you and true to your style.

In with the old, in with the new, I say!

If you’re lucky enough to have period features in your home, contrast them with sleek, modern furniture to really embrace this ‘new meets old’ trend in 2020. One of my mostly admired designers - _beindesign_ studio, so masterly combine classical ele…

Rattan and wicker revisited

You probably remember rattan and wicker as something your grandma would choose for her patio chairs — and you’re not wrong. These two elements may have been around since the Victorian Age but they really surged in popularity during the ‘70s and pretty much fell out of grace afterwards… Until now!

Rattan and wicker are making a strong comeback, thanks in part to the trend of layering old with new items together, but also due to the sustainability and eco friendly angle of natural fibers.

Thankfully, there is a way for your rattan or wicker furniture to look cool and fresh instead of, well… dusty! Go for rattan armchairs, or sustainably made wooden furniture, and combine them with geometric prints and modern items to make this 2020 trend your own.

Coastal-inspired interiors

Pantone had been hinting for a while now that its new color for 2020 will be inspired by the sea.  And indeed the Pantone Classic Blue is perfect for creating a relaxed, coastal atmosphere in your home.

Speaking of colors, Dulux’s paint color of the year is a versatile green called Tranquil Dawn. A hue which will work perfectly to lighten heavier blues like Pantone’s Classic Blue.

Apart from colors, shapes are key to transforming your abode into the chic, coastal escape of your dreams. Think driftwood pieces and wooden furniture with irregular, highlighted curves (just like you would expect to find on a boat!).

If you need some extra inspo, I really love Caleb Woodard’s furniture for a way to evoke that coastal element in a more abstract and artful manner! After all, you don’t need to go overboard with this particular 2020 trend.
